Overview: While instructional leaders rely regularly on formal observations and evaluations to drive change within their schools, there is significant evidence that brief, structured, non-evaluative learning walks/walk-throughs can significantly impact and improve teaching and learning.  This workshop will assist you as you  (1) develop a critical focus for meaningful learning walks within your school; 2) plan and implement a structure and communication process for these classroom visits, and (3) practice and evaluate how to provide effective feedback to teachers.

Two more attempts for all categories of candidates in UPSC's civil services exams

NEW DELHI: Conceding the demand of civil services aspirants for more time to adapt to the changes effected in the Civil Services examination pattern in March 2013, the government on Monday approved two additional attempts for all candidates with effect from the current year.

A Department of Personnel and Training order issued on Monday said the Central government had approved "two additional attempts for all categories of candidates w.e.f Civil Services Examination, 2014, with consequential age relaxation of maximum age for all categories of candidates, if required".

The relaxation in number of attempts comes as a relief to lakhs of aspirants aggrieved by the "sudden" change by the UPSC in the pattern and syllabus for the Civil Services Mains exam 2013. The UPSC had notified the revised pattern on March 5 last year, doubling the number of papers for General Studies and substantially increasing its weightage vis-a-vis optional subjects, months ahead of the Mains 2013 exam.

Incidentally, a group of civil services aspirants had recently protested outside Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's residence against the short notice given to them to adapt to the "drastic changes" in the Mains exam pattern. They had demanded three extra attempts and a relaxation of three years in the age limit. On January 30, Gandhi met a delegation of these aspirants and agreed that their grievance regarding the pattern change was justified. He assured them that steps would be taken to redress the grievance.

Civil services candidates, who now get just four attempts to write the prestigious exam, will now get six attempts. OBC category candidates, who are allowed seven attempts as per the rules, can now take the exam nine times. There is no cap anyway on attempts by a candidate of the SC/ST category.

Notification for the Post of Project Fellow (one) in the Department of English under the UGC-SAP-DRS-II

Applications are invited on plain paper from eligible candidates for the post of Project Fellow (one) in the Department of English under the UGC-SAP-DRS-II Program on a salary as per UGC guidelines. The thrust area of the Program is “Representing the Region: Literary Discourses, Social Movements and Cultural Forms in Western India, 1960-2000”

The Project Fellow will work under the supervision of the Coordinator/Deputy Coordinator of the SAP-DRS-II program. S/he will be expected to travel to libraries and other research institutions across the country, compile and edit materials, maintain the library and help organize programs related to the project.

The Project Fellow(s) should have passed M.A in English/Gujarati/Marathi/Social Sciences with at least Second Class preferably above 55% and should have a good command over English. Knowledge of Gujarati and or Marathi (spoken and written) is essential. Some awareness of Postcolonial/ Translation theory is desirable. Preference will be given to those candidates who are eligible to register for the  PhD Program offered by the Department of English.

The appointment will be for one year initially and may be renewed subject to satisfactory performance. Due consideration will be given to SC/ST candidates according to UGC guidelines.

Balvant Parekh Distinguished Lecture by R. Radhakrishnan, 8 February 2014

Balvant Parekh Centre cordially invites you to a Lecture by Professor R. Radhakrishnan titled “The Many and the One: Phenomenology and Politics” on Saturday, 8 February 2014 at 4 pm at the Centre. This Lecture is part of Balvant Parekh Distinguished Lecture Series instituted by the Centre.

So goes a Sanskrit shloka in the utopian hope that the clamor of the many can be reconciled with the serenity of the preexisting One. Is this aspiration theological or secular; Hindu or generically religious: denominational or denominational; philosophical or political?  My objective in this lecture is to revisit the One-Many problematic on a double register: phenomenology and politics. If phenomenology is solicitous of existential differences and heterogeneity, the language of politics insists on the production of the imprimatur of the One. The polemical question is which One? Under what conditions is the mantra "Unity in Diversity" a genuine article of faith and knowledge, and when does it degenerate into an inane or virulent shibboleth?  Routing my argument through the multiplicity of languages (Derrida, Benjamin) and the precarious fate of secularism in India and elsewhere (Tagore, Gandhi, Bharucha, Said, Connolly, Nandy, Chatterjee), I will endeavor to rework the critical tension between Home and World, between phenomenology and politics. My hope is to animate the "between" as a category of ethico-political persuasion.

R. Radhakrishnan is Chancellor's Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine, and is considered one of the leading postcolonial theorists and literary critics in the United States. Radhakrishnan is also noted as a translator and poet of Tamil as well as a master of English and English literary criticism. His works include History, the Human, and the World Between, Theory in an Uneven World, Diasporic Mediations: Between Home and Location, Between Identity and Location: The Cultural Politics of Theory, Edward Said: A Dictionary. He is also the editor/coeditor of Theory as Variation, Transnational South Asians: The Making of a Neo Diaspora (with Susan Koshy), Theory After Derrida (with Kailash Baral), and guest editor of a special issue of Modern Fiction Studies.  Author of a volume of poems in Tamizh, Negizschhi Oru Nigazcchi Alla, he is also the translator of contemporary Tamizh fiction into English.  Winner of a number of fellowships including the Fulbright, he has published extensively in academic journals and collections of essays. His next forthcoming volume is a collection of essays, When is the Political?

It gives us great pleasure to announce that the School of Languages & Literature, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University is going to organize a two-day national seminar on Feminist Transitions from 24 to 25 March 2014.

Theme and Objectives

Recent years have seen an unprecedented broadening of feminist issues and
practices. Feminist perspectives have moved across and beyond a number of
established boundaries including geographical, national, economic,
ethnic, political, theoretical, cultural, popular, sexual and gender to
expand the scope of the movement. Now more than ever, there is a need for
an inclusive feminism that sees diversity as strength and engages
productively with the complexities and contradictions of the twenty-first
century. According to Rosalind Gill (2007), “postfeminism is best thought of as a sensibility that characterizes increasing numbers of films, television shows, adverts and other media products” and this sensibility is, “made up of a number of interrelated themes,” which raises issues about how far femininity is perceived as a bodily property ? Is there a shift from objectification to subjectification? 
-To what extent emphasis upon self surveillance, monitoring and self-discipline, and a focus on individualism, choice and empowerment been achieved.
This seminar will engage with feminist perspectives on a wide range of social, cultural, theoretical and global transitions that have affected
and/or modified feminisms identity, representation, activism and politics in the twenty first century.

Besides this the seminar hopes to address the following thematic concerns:

• -to debate the state of twenty-first-century feminisms
• to bring feminist and gender-sensitive scholarship into conversation with geographical and social science research on the new times and spaces of contemporary life.
• to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue on the issues facing women’s access to work and education across the globe.

Call for Papers and Guidelines

Aspiring participants are requested to send their abstracts latest by 1^st  March 2014.

Papers should be in MS Word format, Times New Roman, font size 12 with 1.5 space.

Abstracts would be subject to review by a technical committee. Abstracts sent after the

deadline will not be accepted. The word limit for the abstract is 250 and for full paper 2000 words. The time limit for the presentation will be 20 minutes followed by discussion. In addition to these, the following guidelines should be kept in mind:

· Select the theme that best characterizes your research paper. Theme selections will be

used to begin the process of organizing presentations into sessions.

· Proposals related to subthemes other than the ones identified here, could also be

considered.

· Papers should be written as continuous expository narratives, not as lists of points or

as Power-Point presentations.

· Authors must ensure the accuracy of citations and quotations.

· Papers submitted for publication must be written according to the latest MLA Style

and must be thoroughly checked and proofread before the submission.

Biographical Information should include the name of the organization or institution in which

you work as also the position or title you hold within the organization/institution and a short

statement of your interests.
