Through Mini Observations/Learning Walks

Overview: While instructional leaders rely regularly on formal observations and evaluations to drive change within their schools, there is significant evidence that brief, structured, non-evaluative learning walks/walk-throughs can significantly impact and improve teaching and learning. This workshop will assist you as you (1) develop a critical focus for meaningful learning walks within your school; 2) plan and implement a structure and communication process for these classroom visits, and (3) practice and evaluate how to provide effective feedback to teachers.
Objectives : In this workshop participants will
· Work towards a definition of Learning Walks/Walkthroughs and determine how they differ from observations and evaluations
· Look at the different kinds of walkthroughs
· Examine some of the purposes and benefits of learning walks/mini observations
· Study The Five Step Approach for Conducting Learning Walks;
· Develop plans for a set of classroom Learning Walks/mini observations
· Practice having reflective conversations with staff members.
Learning Points
· Meaningful learning walks/mini observations have key features that contribute to school improvement.
· Differences exist between meaningful learning walks/mini observations and formal observations
· Planning and implementing meaningful learning walks/mini observations in school increases effective teaching and learning
